KUALA LUMPUR: Convincing his father to switch from long fluorescent lamps to energy-saving bulbs in their new home paid handsomely for Muhammad Afiq Deen Azizan, who was judged the winner in the Jerneh Friend of Green Malaysia Short Film competition category two.

The budding film director found inspiration from the new bulbs in his home.

"I guess it was a `light bulb' moment for me," joked the 22-year- old, whose win was the second in as many years.

"I even managed to convince the kampung folk featured in my clip to switch to energy-saving light bulbs which made me feel great."

Organised by risk management specialist Jerneh Insurance Bhd, with the support of higher education and career pathfinder Edusmith magazine, the yearly competition is part of the company's corporate social responsibility programme to raise awareness of environmental issues.

The competition this year was divided into two categories with the first for students aged between 16 and 18 and the second for students aged between 19 and 23.

For his achievement, Afiq received RM3,000, a camcorder, a trophy and a certificate.

Abdul Hadi Muslim, 23, finished second and pocketed RM2,000 and a trophy while third-placed Quek Shio Chuan, 23, received RM1,000 and a trophy.

The category one winners were Muhammad Danial Zian, Nik Nazneen Nik Md Yusof (second), and Schaun Mohan (third), all aged 16.

They received similar prizes as category two winners.

Students were required to produce a 50-second short film with the theme "Energy Conservation" with basic audio-visual devices like video cameras or mobile phones.

They were also encouraged to use networking tools such Facebook as a platform to share their opinions on energy conservation.

"Once the culture of conservation is embedded into the minds of our young people, the changes for the better will follow," said Jerneh chief executive officer Lim Sun.
