MENJELANG malam penganugerahan Pertandingan Video Anugerah Merdeka (MAViC) pada 25 September ini, baru-baru ini telah diadakan sesi tayangan bagi 10 video hasil nukilan pelajar institusi pengajian tinggi yang menyertai pertandingan itu.

Tayangan yang dipertontonkan kepada barisan juri pertandingan, peserta dan pihak media di Fakulti Bahasa Moden dan Komunikasi, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) itu khas diadakan bagi membolehkan juri memberi penilaian tentang hasil kerja yang dilakukan oleh peserta.

Menariknya, pertandingan julung kali dianjurkan oleh UPM itu membenarkan barisan pelajar menterjemah rasa dan emosi mereka tentang kemerdekaan menerusi video-video yang dihasilkan.

Pertandingan yang mengangkat tema Aku dan Merdeka itu membariskan 10 finalis yang diwakili oleh pelbagai institusi pengajian tinggi tempatan.

Dua kategori dipertandingkan. Sebanyak lima peserta akhir dipilih bagi kategori Video Pendekmanakala lima penyertaan lagi mewakili kategori Pengumuman Khidmat Awam (PSA).

Bagi kategori Video Pendek, finalis diwakili oleh Nurul Fasihah Mansorudin dari Aswara mengenengahkan video bertajuk Aku Dah Merdeka?, Kamaliah Azhar dari UiTM (Aku Benci Merdeka), Nur Hakimah Izzati Jaapar dari UPM (Titis-titis Kealpaan), Teoh Hui Ting dari KLIUC (Independent The Start) dan Woo Mun Kit dari UTAR (The Call Of Freedom).

Sementara kategori PSA pula diwakili oleh Mohd. Afiq Deen Azizan dari UIA (Projek Merdeka Adik), Mohd Rahhiemi Alias dari UiTM (Cermin Mata Atuk), Mohd. Shakreen Razali dari UPM (Lain-lain), Sarannya A/P Komarakuru dari UTAR (One) dan Amir Aizat Kamaruzaman dari UiTM (Berdiri Tegak).

Karya-karya yang dihasilkan dinilai oleh enam juri profesional.

Pelbagai idea dan gambaran yang dipaparkan oleh barisan finalis tentang semangat dan erti kemerdekaan dalam kehidupan masyarakat tempatan.

Barangkali, untuk kali pertama penganjuran pertandingan itu hasilnya boleh dibanggakan kerana video-video yang terpilih bakal ditayangkan di Astro sekitar September nanti.

Pelbagai kriteria yang diambil kira dalam penilaian dan nilai komersial sesebuah video yang dihasilkan.

Ini termasuklah aspek dan isu yang diketengahkan, struktur dalam persembahan, tema dan kesesuaiannya, cara pembentangan video serta impak, kreativiti dan keaslian sesebuah video yang dihasilkan.

Mengulas tentang video-video yang dihasilkan salah seorang juri Syed Muhamed Syed Hassan, apa yang diperhatikan ketika sesi penilaian itu ada beberapa video yang menepati kriteria pemilihan.

"Dari segi mutu, memang nampak kebangkitan idea di kalangan generasi baru dalam meluahkan apa yang mereka rasa.

"Satu persatu video memang berlainan dan tidak nampak sama daripada yang pernah kita tonton di kaca televisyen sebelum ini.

"Daripada sini, kita dapat melihat pelajar memahami apa yang diketengahkan oleh pihak penganjur dan menepati apa yang hendak dipaparkan itu saya kira cukup membanggakan kami," katanya.

Sementara itu, Pengarah Eksekutif Seketariat Anugerah Merdeka, Datuk Khalid Mohd. memberitahu, tujuan penganjuran pertandingan itu adalah sebagai platform kepada pelajar institusi pengajian tinggi meluahkan erti kemerdekaan dalam bentuk visual.

"Cuma satu persoalan yang bermain, adakah ia telah mencapai seperti apa yang dihasratkan oleh MAViC sebelum ini.

"Apa yang penting, kita sudah bermula. Ini tahun pertama MAViC diadakan dan harap-harap ia dapat dianjurkan lagi pada tahun akan datang," katanya.

SUBANG: The grand prize for the inaugural Malaysia Airlines' Detik-Detik MH Short Film Competition 2010 went to Mohd Afiq Deen Azizan for Tok Nab's Guest Room.

The film was described as a playful and fresh interpretation of how exemplary service is served up by a "ghost" to her guest.

For his ingenuity, Mohd Afiq Deen, 23, from International Islamic University Malaysia, earned himself an opportunity of a lifetime as his winning entry will be shown on MAS inflight entertainment for a month beginning August.

He also received a return air ticket to any destination of his choice.

A prize giving ceremony for the winners was held at the MAS Academy in Kelana Jaya recently.

Malaysia Airlines Communications senior general manager Indira Nair said: "Tok Nab's Guest Room caught the judges by surprise as its approach on Malaysian hospitality was completely unexpected.

"The idea of a 'ghost' anticipating the needs of a guest highlighted that Malaysian hospitality is always done in an almost invisible manner. It reminded us that Malaysians are naturally warm and hospitable; and as such, sometimes guests do not realise that a lot of thought and effort has gone into their comfort.

"Hospitality should be appreciated and enjoyed by both the guest and the host. The film ends with the guest and the host dancing together, showing that they have enjoyed their time together," said Nair.

"While Detik-Detik MH is about rewarding excellence in storytelling and filmmaking, we also want the public's voice to be a part of this journey. The People's Choice award got Malaysians involved.

"We are thrilled to provide an opportunity for young Malaysians to express themselves and are delighted that the students and universities responded with fervour and enthusiasm.

"We look forward to opening this competition to the public next year," said Nair.

Detik-Detik MH was launched in March with the objective of providing aspiring film-makers a platform to showcase their talent.

Open to local and foreign students of Malaysian-based universities, the entries were for films no longer than three minutes each, capturing creative depictions of Malaysian hospitality.

The 13 entries shortlised were picked from 70 entries submitted by 120 students in 20 local institutions nationwide.

Teh Tarik?, a satirical play from a foreigner's point of view, by Ahmad Hadi Abdul Rahman, Tafilah Md Yusof and Mohd Fahmy Ahmad Fuad of SEGi University College won the prize for first runner-up.

The trio received three Asean passes each.

Mohammadreza Shams of Limkokwing University College won the prize for second runner-up with his Hidden Face of Malaysia. It was a well-acted, heart-warming story of a foreign couple whose missing child was found and returned to them by caring Malaysians.

Mohammadreza received a return ticket to any Asean destination.

Award-winning film-maker Tan Chui Mui said the panel of judges was pleasantly surprised with the entries as some of them were very well directed.

Fellow judge Liew Seng Tat said the 70 entries submitted for Detik-Detik MH was a fantastic response for a competition in its first year.

He said there was a wealth of potential of young film-makers in Malaysia which bode well for the local industry.

The People's Choice award went to Curtin University of Technology's (Sarawak campus) Belinda Yip Chien Jiun, Julia Chong Yee Ling and Wong Sie June for Sekampung Sehati.

The People's Choice award was voted online. Some 14,500 votes were amassed on the competition's microsite http://www.mastraveller.com/detikMH.

TMI Malaysia chief executive officer George Aveling, a panel judge, said Sekampung Sehati garnered more than 5,000 votes in two weeks.

The five judges for the competition were Indira Nair, George Aveling, Tan Chui Mui, film-maker/director Liew Seng Tat and director/producer Bahir Yeusuff.

Afiq Deen in The Star for MAS Short Film

THE inaugral short film competition organised by Malaysia Airlines dubbed Detik-detik MH Short Film Competition 2010 came to a close on May 21, with the grand prize going to International Islamic University Malaysia’s architecture student, Mohd Afiq Deen Azizan, for his entry Tok Nab’s Guest Room.

The competition (March 1-April 16), directed at college and university students, received 70 entries from over 120 students across 20 local institutions throughout the country.

Thirteen entries were shortlisted and four prizes were handed out – the top three plus the People’s Choice Award which was based on public voting.

The first runner-up went to Teh Tarik? by Ahmad Hadi Abdul Rahman, Tafilah Yusof and Mohd Fahmy Ahmad Fuad of SEGi University College while second-runner up went to LimKokWing University College’s Mohammadreza Shams’ Hidden Face Of Malaysia.

The People’s Choice Award went to Sekampung Sehati by Belinda Yip, Julia Chong and Wong Sie June of Curtin University of Technology (Sarawak campus).

A screening and a prize giving ceremony were held at the Malaysia Airlines Academy in Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, where all the finalists waited for the announcement of the results.

Also present were the judges of the competition comprising Malaysia Airlines Senior General Manager, Communications, Indira Nair, TMI Malaysia CEO George Aveling, and award-winning Malaysian independent filmmakers Tan Chui Mui, Liew Seng Tat and Bahir Yeusuff.

With the exception of The People’s Choice Award winner, the three winning shorts were based on the judging criteria which emphasised storytelling and creativity and the last, on technicality.

The contestants were asked to deliver a three-minute short film based on the theme, Malaysian Hospitality.

The 13 finalists produced a wide variety of shorts with some coming across as extremely professional while others seemed amateurish. The deciphering of the theme varied from comedy, drama, musical, documentary and abstract, even.

It was indeed a surprise to those who were present and watched the 13 shorts when the announcement of the winners was made.

What seemed like the winning shorts did not win. Instead, the entries that did were those unexpected to win. It was in no way controversial, but after speaking to the judges it became clear that the short film competition’s aim was to discover young and talented filmmakers who boasted originality and creativity, within the context of the judging criteria.

Grand prize winner Afiq and his short Tok Nab’s Guest Room has no dialogue and shows a man engrossed in his handphone while a ghost tries to get his attention and succeeds.

“It’s a very funny way of looking at Malaysian hospitality,” said Tan who has won prestigious and international awards for her debut short film A Tree In Tanjung Malim. “It’s not a direct interpretation of the theme and yet it is very clever and you can see Afiq’s potential as a unique and original filmmaker,” she continued.

Fellow judge Liew concurred with Tan’s statement. “Tok Nab’s Guest Room was completely out-of-the-box and this competition is a great platform to show how talented the students are. And the competition was open to all students and not just students who are studying film,” said Liew.

The 22-year-old grand prize winner was “very, very surprised” at the win and said that the reason he made the short was because he had “nothing to do”.

“I was back home in my kampung in Alor Setar and I came across the competition and the ideas came to me in a split second,” said Afiq who has been making home-made films for the last two years and regularly employs his own family to star in them.

Afiq sent in two entries – the other being Jemput which also made it into the top 13 – and said that he will continue making films even after he graduates.

Indira was highly impressed with the number of entries and creativity of the students and said that the MAS short film competition will most likely be an annual event.

“We’re also thinking of opening up the competition to the public and not just students next year,” she said.

The grand prize winner’s short film will be available on MAS’ in-flight entertainment system but Indira noted that it takes six weeks before they are able to upload it. Afiq also won three MAS economy tickets to any destination of his choice.
